Carbon Intake System

Following the success of our F10 M5 intake and turbo inlets we turned our attention to the F90 M5.

The F90 M5 intake is similar to that of the F10 with its sharp angled air filter housing but with vastly improved smoother turbo inlets.

Using the same 170mm opening on our bespoke air filters we opted for an ultra-smooth air path leading straight down into the frontal air duct with an expanding velocity stack style shape as with all of our other systems.

The design ensures the smooth and direct flow of air from the frontal air ducts keeping intake temperatures at their lowest and the maximum amount of air.

Our development strategy was to create a 2-piece system in order to offer a modular upgrade path and to give the option for owners to purchase our turbo inlets separately.

Development Process

During the development process we created a series of improving prototypes.  The initial prototype was an intake system only attaching to the flexi hoses of the turbo inlets.

Our carbon nylon 3D printed prototype pictured here was road tested and showed excellent gains in throttle response, sound and improved 60-130 mph acceleration times.

We decided to further improve the system with the addition of high flow turbo inlets to create a full system which would allow for the absolute best in air flow.

After some iterations we achieved the best air flow under CFD analysis showing less turbulence than the OEM system with vastly increased airflow.

The newly developed turbo inlets are 30% larger in cross sectional area at the same point as the OEM turbo openings and continue a larger tube diameter up until the turbo housing with an internal velocity stack before the impeller.  This allows for the turbo to draw in significantly more air at any given speed.

The turbo inlets continue without a flexi joint to the intake system which is also larger through the steel brace with an approximate increase in cross sectional area of 20% which leads into the very large 170mm air filter opening.

This results in the largest and most free flowing intake system the platform has seen to date while also keeping intake temperatures at their lowest with the smoothest air path. 

Turbo Inlet 

The turbo inlet pipe has been increased in size by 30% throughout from the turbo inlet flange all the way to the intake system.  Designed to fit the OEM system with a separate EPDM adapter.

An important feature of the construction of our turbo inlet is that it is not just bonded to the aluminum boss but also bolted to it.  A one-piece flange is built into the turbo inlet pipe which slides over the inlet boss and is then bolted using M4 screws.

It is a known issue that aftermarket turbo inlets begin to separate and fail.

Our design is robust and not prone to failure and offers a significant improvement to airflow especially for tuned cars running higher boost levels.

&
Heat Soak

The F90 intake is not a sealed system but has a 50mm radius hole in the front corners of the engine bay facing away from the engine heat and just above the frontal feed.

Based on our testing by placing-by-placing thermocouples before the air filter on both the OEM and Infinity systems we achieved close to stock intake temperatures at speeds under 30mph and equal to ambient temperatures above this.

Air Filtration

Within the beautifully shaped carbon shaped enclosures sits our bespoke short stack high surface area filter larger than any cone filter design currently on offer on the market with a huge opening of 170mm (6 3/4″) and is designed to take full advantage of the intake tubes by altering the direction of the airflow towards the outer walls. 

By placing the air filters in front of the inlet tube we achieve the largest velocity stack ever seen for the S63 engine and which also has the best laminar flow.  It is important to note that we have painstakingly opted for the largest possible air filter for a various number of reasons.  Not only does a larger air filter allow for more air flow and therefore power but it also does not block up for longer and continues to be efficient at its main purpose which is to filter the air of harmful elements.
